How do one turn bumps into lift?

I'm trying to understand how some pilots use small bumps or turbulence to gain lift. Flying "active" usually means going hands up in a bump, which speeds you up, and it is exactly what you don't want when trying to stay in lift. But slowing down too early can cause a stall, especially on sensitive wings. A friend seems to do it well but can't explain how. I fly an EN-C and want to learn. How do you do it?
 
You're describing how to turn a surge's momentum into altitude by timing the brake input right. When the wing surges off a bump, let it rise, then use a smooth, deep brake overhead to convert that energy into lift. What EN-C are you flying and are you comfortable feeling its stall point during slow flight practice?

Catching lift from small bumps is all about timing and feel. You don't always go full hands-up, naybe just enough to let the wing bite into the lift without losing energy or stalling. On an EN-C, stay light on the brakes and keep the wing loaded, letting it pitch into good bumps without overreacting. Its more about small, smooth inputs and reading the air. Your friend probably does it by instinct now, but with practice, youll start feeling when to ease off or give a touch of brake to stay in the lift.

man, that's the holy grail of thermal flying, and I'm not exaggerating. @popsm0ke is right tho, it's tough to explain because it's so much about feel
The key isn't just going hands up. When you hit a bump that feels like a lift, you're looking for that increase in pressure on your wing
As soon as you feel that, it's a subtle, coordinated input, like a quick, light brake input on the side that's lifting (to prevent it from surging forward and out of the core), combined with a weight shift into the lifting air
It's almost like you're trying to pivot the wing into the rising air mass before it spits you out
